Identifying Armadillos
The nine-banded armadillo, which derives its name from the nine divisions in its tough, leathery shell, typically shares a similar size to that of a domestic house cat. This native mammal of the southwestern regions of North America has extended its habitat into Tennessee and is now regarded as a predominant species. Armadillos consume a wide variety of insects and plants and tend to be predominantly nocturnal due to their limited visual abilities. When alarmed, armadillos frequently perform a characteristic leaping motion before making a hasty retreat to seek shelter.
Problems and Damage
The damages attributed to armadillos result from their foraging behavior, leaving behind holes that can be several inches deep. Armadillos are notorious for damaging gardens and even uprooting shrubs while in pursuit of food. Furthermore, armadillos tend not to inhabit human residential areas; instead, they dig burrows alongside building foundations, driveways, or sidewalks. Over time, these burrows can lead to structural problems if left unattended. It's worth noting that armadillos are potential carriers of leprosy, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with their saliva. However, it's important to emphasize that not all armadillos carry this disease, so any scratches or bites should receive immediate medical attention.
